A 17-year-old boy was fatally stabbed and another male teenager was injured in Lower Manhattan on Thursday night by three men who attacked them after asking the teens if they spoke English, police said.

Yeremi Colino, 17, was on John Street near Nassau Street in the Financial District, just steps from the Fulton Street subway station, when he and an 18-year-old were approached around 7:40 p.m., according to the NYPD.

Officials said it was unclear if the victims and suspects knew each other, or why they were interacting. They said Colino lived at the Roosevelt Hotel migrant shelter near Grand Central Terminal in Midtown, but they would not confirm his immigration status.

The suspects, who were all men in their 20s, fled west on foot on Broadway, according to police. Officials described them as wearing multicolored clothing, with one in a green jacket, white pants and white sneakers, and the other two in red pants and red hoodies, black jackets and blue-and-white sneakers.

Colino and the other teen were both taken to Bellevue Hospital, where Colino was pronounced dead and the 18-year-old was in stable condition, according to police.

Police did not make any immediate arrests and said the incident was not currently being investigated as a hate crime.

The NYPD’s 1st Precinct, which includes the southernmost tip of Manhattan, has reported three murders so far this year, not including Thursday night’s incident, according to the department’s CompStat database. No murders were reported in the precinct in the same period last year.
