One person has died and five others were injured Monday after a dispute aboard a 4 train ended in a shooting on the platform of a Bronx subway station, police said.

Police found four adults and two children shot and injured when they arrived at the Mt. Eden station around 4:47 p.m., a spokesperson for the NYPD said. Officials transported a 34-year-old man to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to authorities. There have been no arrests, the spokesperson said.

A 14-year-old girl was shot in the foot and a 15-year-old boy was shot in the thigh and ear, police said. They were both in stable condition at New York Presbyterian Hospital, officials said. A 29-year-old woman was shot in the face and neck, a 28-year-old man was shot in the right arm and a 71-year-old man was also shot, according to the police spokesperson.

NYPD Chief of Transit Michael Kemper said there were two groups of teenagers riding a northbound 4 train when a dispute unraveled, spilling out onto the subway platform, where at least one person took out a gun and started firing.

"We don’t believe this was a random shooting," Kemper said at a press conference at the scene.

He added, “This is unacceptable. And when detectives make an arrest – and notice I said when, because I’m very confident they will – there must be swift, immediate, strong consequences.”

Authorities said they were looking for at least one suspect in connection to the shooting. Police also said detectives were combing through video surveillance footage taken from the scene. A police helicopter was spotted near the scene on Monday night, shining lights onto the streets below.

Ethan Feliciano from the Bronx was standing on the platform when he heard gunshots.

“Maybe five or six times at least,” Feliciano told Gothamist. “And then I heard two people screaming. I heard, like an echo, like a bullet, hit the wall. I could hear a spark on the side.”

Yanesa Ortega said she was walking on the sidewalk underneath the train tracks when she heard the train arrive at the station and several shots fired. She said one younger female victim walked to a nearby shop, bleeding from the side of her face as bystanders tried to help her.

“I was scared. I stayed away from the station, hearing the helicopter, trying to find out more information about what happened,” Ortega, who lives in the area, said in Spanish. “I’ve never seen anything like this here, but the area is hot. It’s dangerous.”

MTA spokesperson Aaron Donovan said northbound 4 trains were running express from 149th Street to Burnside Avenue while the NYPD conducted the investigation. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul posted on social media that her office had been briefed on the shooting.

Assaults in the subways were up by about 3% over the previous year in 2023, according to police data. But overall subway crime — including murders, rapes and robberies — was down 2.6% from 2022.
