May 30, 2024, 8:45 a.m.

John Horan was crossing 36th Street at about 11:30 p.m.

An Uber/Lyft driver allegedly killed a pedestrian in Midtown.

Police said a 34-year-old man was struck and killed by an Uber or Lyft while crossing the street in Midtown Wednesday night.

According to NYPD officials, John Horan was crossing south on 36th Street near 7th Avenue at around 11:30 p.m. when he was hit by a 47-year-old driving a 2023 Toyota Highlander. Police could not say for sure if Horan was in the crosswalk or had a walk signal.

Officers found him unconscious and unresponsive, and transported him to Bellevue hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Toyota driver stayed on the scene, police said, and was not immediately charged with a crime. Officials said detectives were still investigating to see whether any traffic infractions played a role in the incident.

Horan lived on East 30th Street, less than a mile from where he was killed, according to police.

A total of 192 traffic crashes have been reported in the Midtown neighborhood so far this year, according to the NYC Crash Mapper dashboard – but Horan is the first fatality.
