No one was seriously hurt but at least five children were sent to the hospital

A total of 17 people were injured Monday afternoon in a seven-car crash in south Brooklyn and police on Tuesday said they were still investigating exactly what caused the pile-up.
NYPD officials said two 54-year-old women were headed toward a red light on Ocean Parkway and Avenue V in Gravesend around 12:30 p.m. when the driver rear-ended a car directly in front of them. That set off a chain reaction with five additional cars, police said.
The car that initially caused the crash also continued forward and sideswiped one more car, bringing the total to seven.
Police said no one was seriously hurt in the crash. One person refused medical attention at the scene, while the 16 others were taken to local hospitals in stable condition. Several of the passengers were young children – including two 3-year-old girls, a 1-year-old girl, a 9-month-old boy and a 2-month-old boy.
That particular intersection has been the scene of nine crashes since January of 2020, with a total of 11 people injured– including three cyclists, according to NYC Crash Mapper data.
While this is the first major crash at that intersection this year, nearly every other intersection along Ocean Parkway has seen at least one crash since this year began. None of the crashes have been fatal, according to the data.
Brooklyn is leading the five boroughs with the most crashes so far this year: reporting 6,883 collisions from January to October, according to the Crash Mapper database. A total of 40 people have died.
Queens is next, with 6,108 crashes so far this year and 41 fatalities.
