NYPD: 2 pedestrians struck by vehicles in Brooklyn, arrest in another crash

Two pedestrians were struck by cars in separate traffic incidents in Borough Park, Brooklyn Monday night, leaving one victim dead and another in critical condition, according to police.

The first accident happened around 9:30 p.m., when an unidentified woman was hit by a GMC pickup truck as she attempted to cross 11th Avenue near 64th Street, police said. She was taken to Maimonides Hospital in critical condition.

According to police, the truck was traveling south on 11th Avenue, and struck the woman while making a left turn onto 64th Street. Police said both had green lights at the intersection. The 40-year-old pickup truck driver remained on scene and was not charged.

An hour later and a mile and a half away, a 46-year-old man was crossing 37th Street when he was struck by a Honda CRV traveling south on Fort Hamilton Parkway. Police said the man fell to the pavement and was possibly struck by a second vehicle as the Honda drove away. First responders pronounced him dead at the scene.

The pedestrian’s name has not yet been released.

The two accidents come just a week after a 20-year-old driver was arrested for allegedly crashing into a pedestrian and a cyclist in Bed-Stuy, and ten days after 79-year-old Yvonne Sandiford was struck and killed by a car in the same neighborhood.

The ongoing traffic carnage in Brooklyn has prompted calls from residents and advocates for Mayor Eric Adams to better address street safety in the borough. The calls grew especially loud after the October death of 7-year-old Kamari Hughes at an intersection in Fort Greene.

The mayor’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Meanwhile, in Queens, police arrested 27-year-old Rony Zino Monday for allegedly hitting 75-year-old Linda Hirsch in a Ram pick-up truck as she crossed Fresh Pond Road in Ridgewood on Oct. 11.

First responders took Hirsch to NYC Health and Hospitals/Elmhurst, where she was later pronounced dead.

Police said Zino remained at the scene of the accident, but was charged Monday with criminally negligent homicide, failure to yield to a pedestrian, failure to use due care and making an unsafe turn.

The NYPD Highway District's Collision Investigation Squad determined that Hirsch was attempting to cross Fresh Pond Road from east to west around 11 a.m. Zino allegedly struck her as he was making a right turn from westbound 60th Road onto northbound Fresh Pond Road.

A total of 76 pedestrians have been struck and killed citywide this year through Oct. 31, according to the latest data from the Department of Transportation.

That number is down from 2022, which had 91 pedestrian fatalities through the end of October, and 2021, which had 105 during the same time period.
