NYC area due for 'unsettled weather' and rain this week, forecast says

The National Weather Service says a few inches of rain are expected over the next few days.

There will be a warm, rainy start to the week in New York City as several days of wet weather roll through, according to the National Weather Service.

That should help the region further recover from this fall’s historic drought conditions, said NWS meteorologist Dominic Ramunni.

“Fortunately, we have started to see a little bit of rain here as we moved into November and even into the first part of December,” said meteorologist Dominic Ramunni. “But we're still down several inches, and this will certainly help,”

The rain is expected to begin sometime after lunch on Monday and remain steady into the evening commute. Ramunni said travelers should allow for some extra time getting home or elsewhere because roads will become wet.

Tuesday will bring a small reprieve, with some light rain showers and fog, according to the NWS forecast. Then, heavier rain should come back Tuesday night and into Wednesday, making for what the service called "unsettled weather."

“Wednesday looks to be quite rainy, and it's not one of those days that I want to have any outdoor plans,” said Ramunni.

By the time the rain ends this week, nearly three inches in total precipitation are predicted in the New York metro area. That will bring the potential for flooding in spots with typically poor drainage, NWS said.

Temperatures are forecast to be mild, hovering in the 50s on Monday and Tuesday and rising to near 60 degrees on Wednesday. Strong winds are expected to accompany Wednesday’s rain, with possible gusts of up to 40-45 mph in the later part of the day.

“If you have any holiday decorations or anything like that out, you’re certainly going to want to secure those prior to Wednesday,” said Ramunni.

Temperatures will then plummet as skies clear on Thursday into Friday, he said. The highs will be in the 30s at the end of the week.
