FDNY: 3 fires in 3 boroughs kill one, injure several and displace dozens

Firefighters battled three blazes in three boroughs Monday, which left a woman dead, several other people injured and dozens displaced.

The fatal fire started around 7:30 a.m. Monday , on the second floor of a four-story apartment building on Sutphin Boulevard in South Jamaica, Queens, according to police and fire officials.

First responders found 81-year-old Lottie Crawford inside the building, unconscious and unresponsive. Police and FDNY officials said she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A total of 60 firefighters and EMS workers brought the fire under control by 8:14 a.m., according to officials. No other injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

At around 9:30 p.m., another fire started in a 27-story residential building on Lenox Avenue in Harlem, the FDNY said. Firefighters responded to the 16th floor, where officials said FDNY’s Hazardous Materials unit was asked to remove an e-bike.

It’s unclear if the e-bike caused the fire, which was brought under control around 11 p.m. No injuries were reported, officials said..

Police and firefighters then responded to a third blaze at around 10 p.m. on the second floor of a four-story apartment building, on Boynton Avenue in the Soundview neighborhood of the Bronx.

Three residents and three firefighters were transported to Jacobi Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the FDNY. Police said 40 to 50 residents were displaced and working with the Red Cross to find temporary housing.

The cause of that fire is also still being investigated, after more than 100 first responders brought it under control just after midnight.
