A 17-year-old was killed and another teenager was injured when the motorcycle they were riding collided with a minivan in the Bronx on Monday, according to police.

NYPD officials said 17-year-old Bronx resident Juan Alexander Quizhpi Naranjo was driving a moped north on Metcalf Avenue in Soundview, with a 14-year-old girl riding behind him. Around 6:45 p.m., they crashed into a Honda Odyssey that was heading east on East 172nd Street, police said.

Both teens were thrown from the moped and taken to Jacobi Hospital, where Quizhpi Naranjo was pronounced dead. The 14-year-old girl was in stable condition as of Tuesday morning, according to NYPD officials.

Police said they were still looking into the teens’ relationship to one another. They said Quizhpi Naranjo lived on Fteley Avenue, just a few blocks from the crash site.

The 42-year-old man who was driving the minivan stayed at the scene and was not charged, according to police. The NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad was still working to determine who had the right of way and whether a traffic violation played a role in the crash.

Quizhpi Naranjo is the second person to have died so far this year in a traffic crash in the NYPD’s 43rd Precinct, which includes much of the southeast Bronx, according to NYPD data. One person had died in the same period last year.
