Bath Beach apartment fire leaves 2 dead, officials say

Two people died in a fire at an apartment building in Bath Beach, Brooklyn, on Sunday, police said.

Officers responded to a fire at 159 Bay 29th St. around 6:45 p.m. Sunday, according to an NYPD spokesperson. FDNY firefighters were on the scene and extinguished the blaze.

The spokesperson said the victims were found unconscious on the building's second floor. They have not been publicly identified as the city's medical examiner works to determine their official cause of death.

About 60 FDNY and emergency medical personnel responded to the fire, according to the department. Both victims were pronounced dead on the scene.

The fire remains under investigation by the fire marshal and its cause is not yet clear, officials said.
