Members of the NYPD's crime scene unit collect evidence after a fatal stabbing in Lower Manhattan on April 25, 2025.

Police on Monday were investigating five separate homicides that happened across New York City over the weekend, including one that took place on an MTA shuttle bus, according to NYPD officials.

Officials said they made only one arrest by midday Monday, and had publicly identified all but one of the victims. The killings occurred in Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn at various times of day, starting Friday night, the NYPD said. Three of the victims killed were stabbed, and two were shot.

Police responded to the first incident on Friday around 8:49 p.m. at NYCHA’s Alfred E. Smith Houses in Two Bridges, according to officials. They said a 35-year-old man was shot in the chest and was later pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital. The NYPD said early Monday it still did not have a possible suspect or motive in the killing.

Another man was fatally shot in the chest Saturday around 8:30 p.m. on Willis Avenue near East 137th Street in Mott Haven, according to police, who said a woman was also shot and injured in the incident. First responders took both victims to Lincoln Hospital, where the 30-year-old man was pronounced dead and the 42-year-old woman was in stable condition. Police identified him Monday as Darren Davis of Mott Haven but did not provide information about a suspect or motive.

Within the same hour, police responded to an assault on 34th Avenue and 96th Street in North Corona, officials said. Officers found a 32-year-old man with multiple stab wounds and brought him in critical condition to Elmhurst Hospital, where he later died. Police identified him Monday as North Corona resident Fabian Chimbo but did not release information about a suspect or motive in the case.

On Sunday, just before 2 p.m., officers responded to a 911 call about a man stabbed near Crescent and Etna streets in Cypress Hills, according to the NYPD. They found a 41-year-old man who was stabbed in the abdomen on a J90 shuttle bus, the MTA’s alternative to J train service in that area as the transit agency replaced train tracks. Police said the man was pronounced dead at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center; on Monday they identified him as St. Albans resident Alvin Francis and said he had an argument with another man. The MTA referred to the NYPD for comment on the investigation.

Several hours later Sunday, just before 6 p.m., police responded to another fatal stabbing at East Fordham Road and Webster Avenue in Fordham North. Officials said a 31-year-old man was stabbed several times in the torso and was pronounced dead after first responders took him to Saint Barnabas Hospital. Police said Monday he was Morrisania resident Fode Bamba, and they arrested 20-year-old Dontay Taylor on charges of murder, manslaughter and weapons possession. Officials said the two men had a dispute, but police were still investigating what it was about and if the two knew each other.

As of May 4, homicides were down by nearly 27% citywide this year compared to the same period in 2024, according to the latest available NYPD data. Experts say violent crime tends to spike as the weather gets warmer and more people congregate outside.

Police data shows killings are up so far this year in the NYPD’s 115th Precinct, which includes North Corona, and 48th Precinct, which includes Fordham North. They had risen by three and four, respectively, as of May 4.
