4-alarm fire engulfs multiple buildings in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, FDNY says

Six firefighters suffered minor injuries, officials said.

The FDNY mobilized about 170 firefighters and emergency medical personnel to Bensonhurst, Brooklyn on Tuesday afternoon to battle a four-alarm fire on 71st Street, officials said.

The blaze reportedly started at 2052 71st St. just after 1 p.m. and quickly spread to an adjacent building, Chief of Fire Operations John Esposito said. Six firefighters suffered minor injuries and five were taken to area hospitals, Esposito said.

Video footage posted to Citizen showed an entire home engulfed in flames with firefighters working to contain the flames for other homes nearby. There were people inside of the home where the fire started, Esposito said, but they were able to escape the building.

Officials said the fire was brought under control by 3 p.m.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation, Esposito said.
