Witnesses reported that at least two young teenagers were arguing on the bus before the incident.

A 13-year-old teenager was fatally stabbed on Staten Island Friday afternoon, police said.
The incident took place at 2:30 p.m. on an MTA bus at the intersection of Hylan Boulevard and Littlefield Avenue, according to police. NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell said witnesses reported that at least two teenage boys were arguing on the bus when one of them flashed a knife.
At some point during the confrontation, the 13-year-old was stabbed, Chell said. The teen who stabbed him ran away from the bus, and a retired NYPD sergeant followed, eventually detaining him until police arrived. The suspect is now in police custody.
The 13-year-old died from his injuries.
“Tragic, tragic homicide today,” Chell said at a press conference Friday.
Senior Vice President, New York City Transit Demetrius Crichlow said the bus driver was shaken by the incident.
“He's visibly broken up about what transpired but was able to maintain his calm, notified the communications, contacted the police rapidly and did a fantastic job in trying to maintain calm on the bus,” Crichlow said.
“Being a father of two teens myself, and a preteen, it's just a very tragic incident," said Crichlow. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families on both sides.”
