Because paying more for oysters is silly.

Oysters at the Stone Street Oyster Festival in 2007, before they got super pricey
Oysters, everybody loves 'em—but they can also be pricey. For example, just look at the annual Stone Street Oyster Festival on Saturday, where pints of Guinness go for $7 and a half dozen Blue Island oysters will set you back $14 (oysters and beer being a classic combo). But it doesn't have to be this way! If you don't mind slurping your bivalves a little early in the evening, there are a number of places in town you can get 'em for just a dollar a pop. Here are six:
Barrio 47 In the West Village this Mediterranean cocktail/restaurant offers $1 oysters at its happy hour along with your standard happy hour drinks everyday from 5 to 7 p.m. 47 8th Avenue // 212-255-3900
Cornelius Make your way over to this Prospect Heights spot anytime because the Blue Point oysters here are $1 all day (they open at 5 p.m. on weekdays and 3 p.m. on weekends). In addition they've got daily seven and bakers dozen fresh oyster selections available of East and West coast oysters for generally pretty fair market prices. 565 Vanderbilt Avenue // 718-398-6662
Mermaid Inn Both the Upper West Side and the East Village locations (as well as the West Village Oyster bar) of this lovely seafooder have solid happy hours from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 5 to 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Think $1 East Coast oysters, $1.75 west coast oysters and $1 littleneck clams. Also $5 beers, $6 wines and $7 cocktails. Multiple Locations
Morgane Over in Williamsburg, the très charming French brasserie Morgane also has $1 oysters from 4 to 7 p.m. not to mention the $3 draught beers and $5 Sangria. 340 Bedford Avenue // 347-599-0699
Sel de Mer A little deeper into Williamsburg, this seafood spot on Graham Avenue has a great weekend brunch, sure, but the real trick is to show up between 4 and 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, when whatever two oysters are on tap are a buck a pop. 374 Graham Avenue // 718-387-4181
The Ten Bells This Lower East Sider offers two types of oysters for $2.50 each durring the night, but from opening until 7 p.m. they are just $1. A reason to get out of work fast. 274 Broome Street // 212-228-4450
