Nowhere in this city is safe from the forces of evil—aka real estate developers. The latest victim: Sheepshead Bay's excellent El Greco Diner, which will shut its doors sometime next week to be replaced by a "residential tower with ground-level commercial space." Sheepshead Bites broke the terrible news, with word directly from employees that they'll be shutting down; "We’re not sure yet [what day],” the employee told the blog.

Details about who will be taking over the lot are as yet undisclosed, according to rumors a local developer is in contract for the plot, which faces a marina, for something in the $13 to $15 million range. The property had been on the market since March of last year.

El Greco had been serving burgers, seafood and plates of eggs since the '70s, catering to a mostly local, Russian crowd. We loved it not only for its huge portions and tasty grub, but for its excellent outdoor seating across from Sheepshead Bay. Sunbathing cyclists will have to find a new pit stop when heading home from Fort Tilden or the Rockaways next summer.
