Strong Female Leads on Both Sides of the Lens at the Tribeca Film Festival

The Tribeca Film Festival, presented by AT&T, is celebrating women. For the first time in the Festival’s 18-year history, a full half of the competition feature films are directed by women. Pioneering leading ladies are blazing trails in front of — and behind — the camera throughout the rest of the program, too. Don’t miss these female-forward stories, projects and talks:

This year’s Tribeca Talks feature conversations with some of Hollywood’s most talented and multifaceted female creative forces. Marielle Heller, an actor, writer and one of the most exciting female directors working today, will discuss her career on both sides of the camera including her most recent directorial effort, the highly anticipated 2019 release, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, starring Tom Hanks. The ridiculously talented Rashida Jones will sit down for a conversation about her couldn’t-blueprint-it-if-you-tried career in acting, writing, directing and producing, and Sarah Silverman, two-time Emmy winner and a force in stand-up comedy, will be joined in conversation by fellow storyteller Mike Birbiglia.

Catch more funny women at the premiere of Tuca & Bertie, a hilarious new animated series for Netflix from creator Lisa Hanawalt (BoJack Horseman) that chronicles the friendship between two bird-women — Tuca, a cocky, carefree toucan, voiced by Tiffany Haddish, and Bertie, an anxious, daydreaming songbird, voiced by Ali Wong. After the premiere, Haddish and Wong will sit down together for a talk with Hanawalt.

And female-forward television dramas get a spotlight at #Tribeca2019, too. The season two premiere of the Starz original show, Vida, lauded for bringing queer Latina representation to TV, will feature a post-screening conversation with executive producer Tanya Saracho and cast members Melissa Barrera and Mishel Prada, who play sisters trying to save their late mother's bar while navigating money, relationship and real estate problems. And Julianna Margulies stars as a scientist racing to save the U.S. from an Ebola outbreak in The Hot Zone, a gripping new series based on the true story and best-seller by author Richard Preston. After the screening, Margulies will stick around for a conversation, along with showrunners and executive producers Kelly Souders, Brian Peterson, and Lynda Obst, and more.
