Did you know that every Tuesday through April you can skate at Rockefeller Center for just $7.50? Prices typically go up to $14, but this special is in honor of the rink's 75th anniversary (and if you go tonight, our favorite Social Vixen AK-47 will be there). And did you know the rink was sort of accidental?

While many people consider the skating rink Rockefeller Center’s most singular feature, few realize is that it was an accident. The Sunken Plaza, as the area was originally called, was lushly landscaped and boasted high-end shops and restaurants, but few people could be enticed down the stairs leading from the Channel Gardens. In the winter of 1936, in an effort to attract attention to the Plaza, Rockefeller Center’s managers contracted an engineer from Cleveland to build a temporary rink. It became a permanent fixture.

More photos from Rock Center's past can be found right here. And here's your end of skating season update: there is no more ice skating at Bryant Park, but you can still skate at Wollman Rink in Central Park (through April 1st), and the skating rink at the Standard Hotel is open "until it gets too warm," they told us this morning.
