Photos: Tyler The Creator, Brockhampton, And Lil Wayne Get Gov Ball Started

The ninth annual Governors Ball started out a bit tentatively yesterday, as is often the case on the Fridays of these three-day music festivals. Yes, there was lots of great food on hand, and people were having fun exploring all the new art installations and corporate "worlds." And early acts such as Jeremy Zucker, Amber Mark, Hippo Campus and, especially, Jessie Reyez gave their impressive core of adoring fans plenty to scream and dance and sing-along about.

The Internet, Mitski, Blood Orange, and Mø also delivered solid sets as the afternoon went on. But it felt a little like the whole venue was waiting for a spark, for a critical mass of people to finally arrive on the sprawling grounds, and the right act to get on stage and make them explode. That moment, when the day became a Festival, came at exactly 6:45, when the hip hop collective / boyband Brockhampton emerged from their crazy golden plane on the big main stage and the whole place went completely bonkers.

Lil Wayne followed immediately afterward on a stage nearby, and though there were plenty of jokes going around about whether he would actually show up this time after his last-second cancelation at Panorama last summer, Weezy didn't disappoint. His hour-plus, hits-heavy set definitely kept the party going, as did the French producer / techno DJ Gesaffelstein on the upper field. However, most festival-goers were already waiting for headliner Tyler, the Creator back on the main stage, who went on to perform his brand new album Igor.

Note: Remember when I said the main lawn had "squishy spots" yesterday? Closer inspection of the entire grounds revealed large mud puddles everywhere, and hours of people trampling all over everything only made things worse. Much worse. Do not wear shoes that you care about if you're hitting up Gov Ball this weekend.
