Memorial Day Remembrances All Around NYC

There are a number of Memorial Day observances, parades, and other events today to remember those who have died while serving in the U.S. armed forces. Here are a few of them, including the two biggest parades (the Littleneck-Douglaston Parade and the Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade):

• The annual Soldiers' and Sailors' Memorial Observance is from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m., at the Soldiers' and Sailors Monument on Riverside Driver and 89th Street in Manhattan.
• Mayor Bill de Blasio will speak at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum's Annual Memorial Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. Between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., the Intrepid's Memorial Day event will feature a "U.S. Navy missing man formation aerial salute," made up of FA-18 Super Hornets. (This is what the missing man formation for late President George H.W. Bush looked like.)
• The Rosedale Memorial Day Parade, starting at 11 a.m., at 243rd Street and Mayda Road in Rosedale, Queens.
• The 152nd Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade, beginning at 11 a.m. and 3rd Avenue & 78th Street in Brooklyn. Fun fact: Former state senator Marty Golden is leading the parade. The parade will also featured the 369th Experience, a band of African American and Puerto Rican male college students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities, in tribute to the the 369th U.S. Infantry Regiment, aka the Harlem Hellfighters (their playing begins around the 20 minute mark below).

• The 100th annual Staten Island Memorial Day parade, starting at 11:30 a.m. and stepping off at Hart Boulevard in the West Brighton section.
• The 81st Ridgewood-Glendale Memorial Day Parade starts at 11 a.m. and, according to QNS.com, "As tradition goes in odd-numbered years, the march will step off from the Glendale Memorial Triangle at the corner of Myrtle and Cooper Avenues, then head west along Myrtle Avenue to Ridgewood" in Queens.
• The Rockaway Beach Memorial Day Parade kicks off at 11:30 a.m. and runs along Beach Channel Drive, from Beach 130 Steet to Beach 94 Street.
• The Littleneck-Douglas Parade steps off at 2 p.m., starting on Northern Boulevard at Jayson Avenue and continuing along Northern to 245th Street. This year's celebrates the 205th anniversary of the "Star-Spangled Banner."

Finally, Madison Square Park has an installation of 10,000 flags, Fallen Soldier’s Flag Garden—with each flag representing 10 soldiers—to "honor the more than 100,000 fallen soldiers from the State of New York since the Revolutionary War." Veterans and volunteers planted the flags in the park's Elm and Veterans lawns, and Fallen Soldier’s Flag Garden can be seen through Tuesday May 28th.
