With the end of summer approaching, Eastern Parkway came alive for the annual J'Ouvert celebration and its accompanying West Indian American Day Parade on Monday. Hundreds of thousands of West Indian people call the city home, and many of them live in and around Crown Heights. J'Ouvert, which roughly means "daybreak," kicks off in the early hours of the morning as revelers covered in paint and feathers take to the streets alongside lively steel bands. The event is one of the city's most popular, with thousands of revelers attending each year. Photographer Zakiyyah Woods was on scene to capture the festivities.
