Artist Carmen Herrera gets major sculpture exhibition with Public Art Fund

Public Art Fund presents Estructuras Monumentales, the first major exhibition of outdoor sculptures by 104-year-old artist Carmen Herrera.

Groundbreaking Cuban artist Carmen Herrera’s brightly colored large-scale sculptures, Estructuras Monumentales, have arrived in City Hall Park. Free and open for the public to enjoy, the vivid red, blue, green, and yellow sculptures are the culmination of Herrera’s long interest in three-dimensional minimalism.

Now well known for her vibrant, abstract geometric paintings, Herrera has only recently received recognition for her revolutionary body of work. Her Estructuras series, which she first envisioned in the 1960s, are even less well known. The aluminum structures feature strong lines and form, with bold monochromatic colors. Three newly-realized sculptures based on historic designs and two sculptures never before seen in the U.S. range from seven feet in height to over 12 feet in width. The sculptures mark the first major exhibition of outdoor work by the artist in her seven-decade career.

Sited throughout the park’s groves and pathways, Herrera’s sculptures offer a powerful yet reflective experience. The Estructuras contain openings between their monochrome sections, bringing the landscape into the form of the sculptures. Each work is comprised not only of the painted aluminum, but of the surrounding environment as seen through the negative space.
